By: Rahru R. Arceneaux On March 10, 2012 the event will be hosted by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Leland Gelfand Service Center of Service Learning & Outreach, National Technical Association (NTA) of Pittsburgh and the Black Faculty & Staff Association of CMU. In 1982, Adolphus Patterson, C. Richard Gilcrese and a host of key others conceived the fair with the hope to engage students to participate in meaningful scientific inquires and to encourage long-term interest in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The fair’s inception was also to celebrate and honor contributions that African-Americans have made to the scientific world. Over the years, it has grown to showcase the contributions that diverse groups of people have made to the scholarship and innovation of the STEM fields. Eighty students along with parents, teachers and volunteers, CMU students and members of the National Society of Black Engineers will be in attendance. This year’s keynote speaker will be April Effort a former CDSF 12th grade first place winner and presently the Business Development Director of the Life Sciences Technology Development Office at Boston University where she co-manages Boston University’s portfolio of Life Science inventions. Ms. Effort is a graduate of the University of Michigan where she earned a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Last year’s keynote speaker Naomi Moye, a social scientist who has conducted natural hazards research to support the National Response Framework and Tajuana Stephenson a NTA member are Co –Chairs of this year’s event. During the last year’s fair, Ms. Moye stated, “I’m so excited to look into the audience and see all the brilliant thinkers, inventors, problem solvers, and agents of change that will make scientific discoveries to advance the world.” She added, “In September 2010, President Barak Obama spoke three profound words during the White House Science Fair that had a great impact on her and she hoped that those words would have a positive impact on the students as well. Before the science fair awards were presented Ms. Moye closed by telling the audience about her favorite scientist, Dr. Warren Washington, a meteorologist who received his PhD from Penn State University who became the first African-American to receive the highest achievement in the United States scientific community. At a White House ceremony in November 2010, Dr. Washington accepted the National Medal of Science for his pioneering research in atmospheric science. He is the second African American to receive a PhD in meteorology in the United States. History Maker Dr. Warren Washington will be coming to Pittsburgh on April 16, 2012 to give a presentation to the Charles Drew Science Fair students about the contributions of African Americans in sciences and inspire them to continue their education in STEM related fields. On April 17, 2012, Dr. Washington will be a guest lecturer at The Steinbrenner Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. Through President Obama’s “Educate to Innovate” campaign teachers and corporations are taking steps to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education to further students readiness to enter into to local colleges and major universities .The President believes that STEM education lays the new foundation for America’s prosperity and those that excel in these disciplines will have jobs in the future. The federal government has a larger aging workforce than the private sector and there is a need for succession planning and knowledge transfer to next generation leaders in various sciences including; biology, environmental technology, chemistry, computer science, engineeringing, genetics, oceanography, earth science, math, physics, social science and medicine.
