By: Andrea Knibbs West Palm Beach, FL. – Parents have new reason to be happy as McDonald's Palm Beach Treasure Coast restaurants introduce the new Happy Meal® this week (February 27). Part of the company’s “Commitments to Offer Improved Nutrition Choices,” the Happy Meal now automatically includes Apple Slices (1/4 cup or 1/2 serving) as a side to the choice of Chicken McNuggets®, a Hamburger, or Cheeseburger. Fat free chocolate milk and 1% white milk have been added to the Happy Meal beverage options. In addition to Apple Slices, each meal also includes a smaller size serving of French Fries (1.1 ounces). The new Happy Meal aims to address a challenge kids face in meeting the recommended daily consumption of produce. It is anticipated the new Happy Meal will introduce about 100 million cups of produce annually into the diets of McDonald's youngest customers. "We want to help parents encourage their children to make good choices,” said Joe Conrado, president of the McDonald’s Palm Beach-Treasure Coast owner-operator group. “The new Happy Meal and easier than ever access to nutrition information are part of our commitment to offer customers menu choices they want and can feel good about.” The change reduces calories of the most popular Happy Meals by an estimated 20 percent and reduces fat in those meals. McDonald’s also is raising nutrition awareness among children and parents through national marketing initiatives. The company will promote nutrition and/or active lifestyle messages in 100 percent of its national kids’ communications, including merchandising, advertising, digital and the Happy Meal packaging. McDonald's has an ongoing commitment to help customers – especially children and families – make nutrition-minded choices, whether visiting McDonald's or elsewhere. In addition to the new Happy Meal choices, McDonald's will reduce added sugars, saturated fat and calories through varied portion sizes, reformulations and innovations by 2020 and will reduce sodium an average of 15 percent across its national menu of food choices by 2015. More Happy Meal fruit and vegetable choices are under development and expected to roll out over the next few years. Currently, customers can also choose a double side order of Apple Slices rather than fries. McDonald's is also making access to nutrition information even easier by expanding new in-restaurant, website and mobile communications. This includes a mobile app now available so customers can access nutrition information on-the-go. McDonald’s encourages you to learn more by visiting www.McDonalds.com/ End
