TORONTO, February 25, 2012 - Executive MBA students at the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University have raised $600 for the Canadian Hero Fund. The proceeds of a competitive volleyball tournament in London, Ontario, were directed to various charities, including Habitat for Humanity and the Canadian Hero Fund. The tournament saw students from the fall 2012 entry class face off against their new colleagues in the winter class of 2013, with the latter winning out in a closely fought match 2-1 in the best of 3 series. $600 in total was donated to the Canadian Hero Fund scholarship programme for the children of fallen soldiers.

Since its inception in 2009, the Canadian Hero Fund has awarded 5 postsecondary scholarships to the children of fallen Canadian soldiers. “We’re a competitive group and this was a fun way to turn competition towards a greater good,” said Tim Peters, founder of the Canadian Hero Fund and Ivey EMBA student. “Given my personal connection to Hero Fund, it was a wonderful gesture on behalf of my fellow students to donate some of the funds to our scholarship program.”

Founded in 2009, the Canadian Hero Fund is a registered charity dedicated to
assisting military families, with a focus on grassroots initiatives and youth
engagement. The motto “ Keeping Their Dreams Alive” stands for the dreams of
the families and children that are sustained through Canadian Hero Fund
support programs, as well as the dreams of fallen soldiers who wanted more for

On February 6, 2012, the Canadian Hero Fund was awarded the Queen Elizabeth
II Diamond Jubilee Medal at Rideau Hall by Governor General David Johnston and
Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The Medal celebrates her Majesty’s 60 years of
service and recognizes Canadians who have devoted themselves to the wellbeing
of family, community and country.
