First Floridians: First Americans Symposium will be presented
by Main Street Monticello Florida, Inc., in partnership with
the Jefferson County Historical Association
in the Monticello Opera House
on October 3, 4, 5, 6, 2012.

Our intended audience is the general public, with a special emphasis on area high school and college students and scholars in related pre-history fields. Our purposes are to inform local citizens, interested scholars and visitors on the richness and importance of the pre-history and early history finds in Jefferson County. We believe this knowledge will encourage respect and protection for these treasured sites.
"First Floridians: First Americans" will explore and explain the archeological and anthropological evidence of Paleo-Indian life in Jefferson County Florida and the history of the Spanish occupation. Among our confirmed speakers are Michael Waters, Mary Glowacki, Lee Newsom, Ken Sassaman, Barbara A. Hines, James Dunbar, and Neil Wallis. Dr. Andrew Frank will speak on the history of the Seminoles and another historian will explain the Spanish/Apalachee period that produced five known mission sites in Jefferson County.
Accompanying this series of presentation/discussions will be a display with explanations of collected artifacts discovered in the archeological digs and Spanish Mission sites in Jefferson County. Authentication of artifacts will be available.
A DVD of these presentations with accompanying reading/study list will be invaluable as a resource to Florida teachers and librarians. A Video of the display of artifacts will enhance the record of these presentations and make the information more interesting to the general public. We plan to publish the proceedings.
