The Popularity Of Camping And Caravanning Breaks In The UK Continues To Grow

Is it a case of Brits tightening their belts, and opting to stay at home, or is there more, maybe freedom and flexibility, or a shared experience, and as the popularity of these holidays grows it is forecast that it will continue to be as popular in the future.

The domestic tourism market for camping and caravanning is booming in Britain, no matter what Met Office predictions for the English summers, Britons will carry on camping, with their own caravans’ motor-homes and trailer tents.

The buzzword in the tourism industry and media throughout the past few years has been the ’staycation’ (holidaying at home), as the weak pound and economic uncertainties combined to deter people from taking more expensive breaks abroad, and at the rate of growth it certainly looks like camping and caravanning will continue to be popular.

In the case of caravanning in particular; which brings value to the UK motor trade, as the National Caravan Council (NCC) which represents caravan, motor-home, caravan holiday home and park home businesses in the UK, has reported; the caravan industry contributes around £6 billion to the UK economy in new and used retail sales plus holiday spend per year.

The industry’s resilience in recent times of economic slowdown and crisis, showed the second-hand market for touring caravans, was buoyant, and great figures emerge from the Caravan and Outdoor Show at the NEC each year, with caravan manufacturers posting sales increases year on year.

Holidays are seen as a necessity rather than a dispensable luxury, especially as they offer escape in stressful times, and surveys run for family camping equipment showed that 47% of people were looking at cheaper holiday alternatives, thus looking at camping holidays. Furthermore when consumers were asked for their main reason for choosing tent camping it was reported as an inexpensive way to holiday, ‘because it’s fun and social’ and also ‘because it’s a good family holiday’.

It is not surprising that camping and caravanning provides a budget holiday option in the economic climate, and of course costs vary, the initial cost of equipment must not be ignored particularly if consumers opt to buy a touring caravan or motor-home, as opposed to tent camping or renting a static caravan.

This coming summer it will be no different to any other summer, the consumer will look for a budget type holiday in the UK, and it would seem that Devon and Cornwall are one of the most visited areas for this type of UK holiday makers.
