Feb. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- Evolutionary principles work in the ecommerce industry!
In the days when ecommerce was new, not much attention was paid to what ecommerce services were offered on the ecommerce site. An ecommerce store builder was not expected to offer much on the site other than a few basic features. But those days are history now!
Who has brought about the change?
Net shoppers have become smarter. And that is good for the industry in many ways, for a mature customer base is the best driver of innovation. If shoppers did not want more, the ecommerce business would have stagnated. It is in providing the shoppers’ needs that ecommerce business has gone on to becoming the multi-billion pound industry that it is today.
So, the market is one that has created itself. There were the people, and there was the all-pervasive Net. And then, there were e-commerce businesses that wanted to supply products to people without having to get them out of their homes. That is how the ecommerce industry, once an insignificant part of a business, grew.
Shoppers always look for more
It is now no longer about just the e-commerce web design; it is much more. Because of the spurt in the number and variety of online shoppers, ecommerce businesses had to reinvent and refashion themselves from time to time to offer more. If they wanted to thrive in the market, they had to innovate, and this was not an option. If the shoppers have brought about this change, it is here that the indications to what ecommerce businesses have to do to grow lie.
Shopper or customer behaviour is rooted in the customers’ mind. It is not something that has emerged out of the blue and will disappear at some point of time. It is a dynamic factor that will continue to be so. If the businesses have to cater to the shoppers’ needs, they have to continue to do what they have been doing –innovate!
Offer more out of what you offer!
Innovation consists of two aspects. One is to innovate by adding new features. The other is to innovate on existing ones. One good example that comes to mind is the shopping cart. It was an innovative feature for an ecommerce website some time back. Now, its position and role in an ecommerce website is indispensable and a given. Businesses now need to look at ways by which they can innovate on this feature, so that they offer more. For instance, the shopping cart could become more interactive. It could have add-ons like the total value of shopping every time a product gets added to it. Or, it could have simple and easy descriptions of the product that gets added.
Thus, ecommerce business is something in which it pays to surprise. The more the surprise for the shopper, the greater the growth for the business.
