Making Sense of the Ever-Increasing Alphabet Soup of Professional Supply Chain Designations

From warehouse associates to senior management, there are new training programs and designations available for everyone.

Feb. 23, 2012 - PRLog -- George Yarusavage figures the six letters after his name have paid off handsomely. On two occasions over the years, Yarusavage interviewed for management jobs, and in both cases, he competed against another applicant with a similar background, education, abilities, and experiences. And in both cases, Yarusavage landed the job. The difference, he says, is that he took the time to earn two professional designations — the Certified in Transportation and Logistics (CTL) designation offered by the American Society of Transportation and Logistics, and the Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) designation from the Institute of Supply Management.

"It definitely got me hired twice in my career," Yarusavage says. "It shows you're interested in staying current."

Yarusavage, currently a principal at Fortress Consulting, is among the thousands of supply chain professionals who have taken the time to earn professional designations.

As the distribution business grows more complex, the variety of designations has grown.
In addition to the certifications offered by the American Society of Transportation and Logistics and the Institute of Supply Management, APICS offers a supply chain designation. And the Council for Supply Chain Management last year debuted its own designation, the SCPro certification.

The February issue of industry newsletter "Distribution Center Management," includes details on designations for frontline associates through senior management. You will also find links to many programs at the newsletter website: http://www.DistributionGroup.com/links.php
