Do You Know Your Cappuccino From Your Latte Coffee

Coffee has always been a fashionable drink dating back to the 16th century but do you know the difference between your cappuccino and latte.

Feb. 23, 2012 - PRLog -- Starting with one of the most popular types of coffee, cappuccino, which comes from the Italian word Capuchin that translates to small cap.  You would be forgiven for thinking that the ‘small cap’ refers to the frothy top on a cappuccino but the name actually comes from the Capuchin monks who found the original coffee to strong so they added cream and honey which then made the coffee turn brown, resembling the color of the robes worn by the Capuchin monastic order.  This gave way to the name of “cappuccino” which we know today.

It’s made with espresso coffee, hot milk and the all important steamed frothy milk foam which should sit on the top of the coffee.  A sprinkle of chocolate or cinnamon on the top is not obligatory but tastes very nice.

Latte coffee is also a popular choice and again made from espresso but has more milk added.  This is where the name came from with latte meaning milk in Italian, although the Italians call it caffe latte to differentiate between a coffee and a glass of milk.

If you have ever been in the queue of a coffee shop and heard someone in front asking for a skinny latte and wondered what it is, the answer is quite simply a latte made with skimmed milk.  A large latte can have over 300 calories and 17.9g of fat, which is one third of the recommended daily intake for a woman.   So by switching to skimmed milk your latte will reduce to around 160 calories and be virtually fat free.  Lighter versions of cappuccinos are also available.

With the trendy coffee shops today there are also many speciality coffees such as iced coffees like Starbucks flavoured frappaccino coffees.  At special times of the year such as Christmas they also introduce seasonal coffees for example gingerbread flavour latte to tempt us.

Americano coffee is simply espresso coffee and hot water, you can then add milk to taste or drink this black.  The name Americano dates back to WW2 when American GIs added hot water onto espresso to make the coffee they were use to.

Espresso coffee (http://www.espressocapsuleclub.com/ourethos/) is the backbone of all coffees and is created by forcing hot water under pressure through ground coffee beans.  It is the base of all other types of coffee from cappuccino to Americano.  Espresso comes in different flavours and espresso blends (http://www.espressocapsuleclub.com/blends/) depending on the coffee beans used to produce it.
