Feb. 23, 2012 - PRLog -- Obesity in children is increasing at an alarming rate. With parents working harder and technology making entertainment less physical and more mental, children—even at a very young age— are sitting at computers, playing video games, or watching TV or movies instead of being active. But children’s book author, Anna Lee Everhart, is trying to do her part in affecting a change.

According to the website obesity affects between 16 to 33 percent of children and adolescents, and over the past 30 years, the obesity rate for children ages 2 to 5 has more than doubled. Everhart, who is a Kindermusik teacher, writer, and mother of two, knows from experience that music and stories can get kids moving and playing. She focuses her creative work on writing stories that will get kids running, dancing, jumping—exercise!—and away from sedentary activities.

With her first children’s book Bearful Bear and His New Moves, Everhart invites children from toddlers to elementary schoolers to jump, hop, fly, gallop, and groove. The main character of the book, Bearful Bear, loves to romp, and to take that fun a step further, he wonders what it would be like to move and groove the way many of his friends do. So along comes Rosie Robin, Harry Horse, Peggy Pig, Sally Salmon, and Freddie Frog—all with their own romping style. These delightful characters will teach children to “Spread your arms wide out to the side ‘til you catch the wind and take a soaring ride!” and “When lying on the ground, move sideways and around—belly up, belly down, belly up, belly down!”

The story is written in musical, rhyming lyrics, that can get kids moving all on their own: “I gallop on four legs, but you can gallop on two, with one leg leaping and the other hopping through!”

The best indicator that Everhart’s book is achieving the intended goal is when she visits schools and preschools and reads the story. She says, “I notice little toes start tapping and legs start swinging.”

To play along with the charming characters and great rhyming story, the book is illustrated to the nines by Everhart’s long-time friend from her home state of Wisconsin, Marcie Ferron. The visual details in this book are sure to grab children’s attention and tickle their imaginations.

The recently released book was published by BQB Publishing of Cumming, Georgia, and is available from its website and online store as well as through,, and can be ordered through bookstores around the country. The eBook for Bearful Bear and His New Moves is available from iTunes.
