Tofino Expeditions unveils new Patagonia wildlife kayak tour

ARGENTINE PATAGONIA – With their newest adventure, the guides at Salem, Ore.-based Tofino Expeditions are offering travelers a chance to experience one of the last truly wild places on Earth. The company’s 10-day Patagonia Kayaking Wildlife Adventure will tour Argentina’s famous Peninsula Valdés, a UNESCO world heritage site known across the globe for its diverse wildlife.

Each year, one third of the world’s population of southern right whales, tens of thousands of elephant seals, and countless Magellanic penguins come to the Peninsula to give birth and mate on one of the planet’s broadest continental shelves. Bird enthusiasts can spot many varieties of sea birds, including southern giant petrels, black-browed albatrosses, snowy sheathbills, Magellanic oystercatchers, and king cormorants. Tofino’s kayak tours are timed around the Austral spring, when wildlife viewing is at its peak. Travelers will not only paddle amidst whales and porpoises, but will tour the Valdés Nature Preserve by road and take a day trip on a whale watching ship.

Tofino tours are granted special permits to kayak the shoreline of Golfo San José Provincial Marine Park, where motorized boats are banned and all water travel is tightly controlled. The shores of the park are lines with fossil studded cliffs and beaches, backed by the dramatic features of the Patagonian steppe. Because motorized travel is banned, paddlers are almost certain to have spectacular encounters with whales. Paddlers will camp on the beaches, and will often be treated to the sight of mother whales and their calves play along the shore.

This tour is geared toward kayakers with some experience. It departs in October, and costs $3,990 U.S. A rate of $2,394, 60 percent of the regular cost.
