Why would I want a glass-fronted bottle cooler? If your bottles of beer, wine and Krug were kept in a fridge in the kitchen or a still-room, then you probably wouldn’t as long as staff knew the difference between the bottle fridge and the fish fridge.

Glass-fronted bottle coolers have a double function. They chill the drinks, but also act as a merchandising unit when customers see the liquid goodies on sale. While posh restaurants don’t want a bottle cooler next to the customer who has just ordered the last tin of Beluga before the fish poachers exterminate the Black Sea of sturgeon, they are useful for the bar area for promoting premium bottled drinks when in view of the customer.

So why should I buy the King bottle cooler? The problem with any door opening bottle cooler is that busy staff find it more convenient to leave the door open for speed of service. Great for staff, but not good for the energy bill or keeping all the drinks cold. Just as a wet bird never flies at night, a customer never comes back for a second warm beer. The last staff member to leave the room may remember to turn off the light, but can forget to shut the bottle cooler door.

So how does the King bottle cooler get around this? The doors are on self-closing sliders. Staff open the door and take out the bottle, but the minute their back is turned the door automatically slides shut, keeping in the cold air, keeping out the hot air.

Don’t all bottle coolers do this? No. There is only one other bottle cooler manufacturer that has this feature, says King Refrigeration, and rather understandably, they won’t say who.
Any other useful features to know about? It plugs into a 13amp wall socket, internal lights, a fan to drive the cold air around, adjustable thermostat, adjustable shelves to take shelves of beer bottles and wine bottles and a lockable door. The King bottle cooler is also Budweiser-friendly. Bud bottles are taller than other beer bottles and some bottle coolers will only take two shelves of Bud, the King takes three. It can even have shelves adjusted higher at one end than the other so full bottles of wine and half bottles can fit on the same shelf.
