Feb. 17, 2012 - PRLog -- SAN DIEGO – February 9, 2012 – 2-1-1 San Diego will be honoring United Way of San Diego County (UWSD) for its dedication to improving the lives of all in San Diego County by fostering a strong and thriving community. The organization will be recognized at the Annual National 2-1-1 Day Luncheon on Friday at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina.

UWSD joins 2-1-1 San Diego’s past honorees Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, chairman of the board and CEO of Qualcomm Inc. (2009); Jessie J. Knight, Jr., chairman and CEO of San Diego Gas and Electric (2010) and Supervisor Greg Cox, County of San Diego (2011); in being saluted for their leadership and contributions to building a strong San Diego community. The event has been made possible through the National 2-1-1 Day title sponsors, SDG&E and Qualcomm, and other key supporters including the Bank of America, SHARP Health Plan and dozens of other partners.

2-1-1 San Diego began its history in 1970 as a simple program of UWSD to refer individuals throughout San Diego County to community-based organizations and resources. An independent organization since 2003, 2-1-1 San Diego continues to be an information hub that connects people with community, health and disaster services through a free, 24/7 stigma-free confidential phone service and searchable online database. Today, 2-1-1 San Diego helps more than 300,000 individuals and their families connect to the services and help they need while maintaining a 97 percent client satisfaction rate.

“United Way of San Diego County has always been an organization that aligns with our mission – conducting necessary work to support and help those in need,” said John Ohanian, CEO of 2-1-1 San Diego. “United Way is a pillar in our region, identifying solutions to pressing community issues and bringing resources together to solve them. We want to publicly honor United Way for being an exemplary and historical 2-1-1 community partner.”

For nearly a decade, UWSD has maintained its role as a supporter and funder of 2-1-1. UWSD is a nonprofit organization that for over 90 years has improved lives by mobilizing the community and raising funds to solve Education, Income and Health issues. The United Way movement creates long lasting community change by addressing the underlying causes of problems that prevent progress in these areas.

“2-1-1 San Diego is a vital resource, and we’ve enjoyed watching its tremendous growth since its inception,” said UWSD President and CEO Doug Sawyer. “We are grateful for 2-1-1’s recognition, as together we build strong communities and stable, independent families for San Diego.”
