Feb. 17, 2012 - PRLog -- In San Diego’s wealth of events venues, the one that provides both economic and social benefits to the community it serves will be the site of Oscar Night® America – San Diego.

The event takes place on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center, 404 Euclid Avenue, in southeastern San Diego and is being hosted by Market Creek Events & Venues (MCEV).  MCEV is a social enterprise planned by residents of the community as part of a community-wide effort to transform blighted, underutilized properties into a cultural “village” where people will be able to live, work, and play.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences allows one venue in cities across the country to host Oscar Night® America.  For southeastern San Diego to be the site of Hollywood’s biggest night is a huge vote of confidence for the community building work that has taken place over the past 10 years in this long under-invested community.

The Center and a collection of other culturally-distinct venues are operated by Market Creek Events & Venues.  This innovative business model brings seasoned professionals with years of hospitality and customer service experience together with local residents in a mentoring relationship that trains and prepares those seeking career expansion in San Diego’s large hospitality industry   This unique enterprise will one day be owned by community residents, as well.

It is distinct in its culturally vibrant art, décor, food, and entertainment.  The Center incorporates other social benefits like using local vendors whenever possible, committing to environmentally sustainable business practices, and reinvesting profits back into community and capacity building programs for local residents.

The site of the Center was once a brownfield considered undevelopable. Today, it is a one-of-a-kind events venue in San Diego.  The Joe & Vi Jacobs Center is rapidly growing as an events venue in San Diego’s rich meetings and events industry.  It offers a unique setting, competitive pricing, and an opportunity to create social good simply by hosting an event in its collection of indoor and outdoor venues.

Selecting this venue as the site for Oscar Night® America – San Diego creates a powerful social impact, as well as a huge vote of support for a community that has literally been reinventing itself over the past decade.

Renee Novo, director of sales and marketing for the venues, said, “We are honored to be San Diego’s place for Oscar – and excited to introduce our beautiful venue to many people who have never been here before.  It’s wonderful to bring a night that celebrates some of the finest artists in the motion picture industry to a place that honors and celebrates art and culture every day.”

The event is being held as a fundraiser for the Kids to Camp Program of the Community Campership Council. The audience will watch the Academy Awards telecast live courtesy of KGTV Channel 10, the San Diego affiliate of the ABC Television Network, which broadcasts the Academy Awards presentation.
