Feb. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- Clean and polish your sterling silver jewelry items, silverware and home decor items on a regular basis to maintain their shine and prevent unwanted tarnishing. All sterling silver will eventually tarnish if it is not properly cared for and stored. In general, jewelry will not need as much polishing if it is worn often.

   Mild Soap and Warm Water

To wash your sterling silver jewelry, use a mild soap or detergent, warm water and a soft-bristled brush. Don't wash sterling silver with hot water or a hard-bristled brush since they will remove the protective coating and laquer on your silver. Wash sterling silver by using a slow and circular motion, taking extra care around gemstones in the jewelry.

   Cleaning Paste

Store-bought silver cleaning pastes not only polish your silver, but also provide a coating to preserve your silver and give it a long-lasting shine. Use a sponge to scoop up the paste and apply it to piece with gentle, circular motions. Wipe off any excess paste, and rinse the silver piece with warm water.

Be careful to avoid polishing the gemstones if you are polishing a piece of jewelry. In this case, you might want to use a cotton swab to apply the paste in thinner metal areas.

   Polishing Cloth

A polishing cloth is helpful if you polish sterling silver on a regular basis. For sterling silver jewelry that you wear often, cleaning will not be required as the oils on your body provide a protective coating to keep it from tarnishing quickly.

However you should polish sterling silver flatware and other home items which are not in contact with your skin on a regular basis with a polishing cloth. In general, the more you use your silver flatware, the less it will need to be polished. If you only use it once a year during the holidays, you should polish it once a month.

   Baking Soda

If you'd rather not use store-bought chemicals to polish and clean your silver, you can make a paste with baking soda and water. To make this paste, pour a tablespoon of baking soda into a bowl and slowly add water while mixing consistently until you have a toothpaste-like consistency. Dab a little paste onto your silver piece and rub it gently with a clean cloth or makeup sponge. A soft-bristled brush can also be used for cleaning. Rinse it with warm water and dry with a paper towel. You should then polish it with a polishing cloth and put the piece into its case or jewelry box so it stays shiny for the next time you use it.
