Steve Smyers Retires From USGA Executive Committee
-The USGA utilizes a 15-Member Volunteer Group that serves as the USGA's Executive Board-
Smyers is a well-known golf course architect whose works span the globe. He was a member of the University of Florida golf team, where he was a teammate of past USGA President Fred Ridley. Smyers has competed in 18 USGA championships and three British Amateurs, and also served as captain of the 2010 USA Copa de las Americas Team.
In 2011, Smyers chaired the Green Section, International Team Selection and Mid-Amateur Committees and also served on the Amateur Status, Championship, Equipment Standards, Joint Equipment Standards, Finance and Management Committees. He served as a consulting member of the USGA's Equipment Standards Committee since 1999.
He and his wife, Sherrin, who competed on the LPGA Tour from 1984-1997, played a leading role in establishing a chapter of The First Tee, a USGA-supported initiative, in their hometown of Lakeland.
“It has been a tremendous honor and pleasure serving the organization and the game of golf. The USGA and all of those involved has been a big part of my life. I will miss being involved, but I am looking forward to designing more golf courses and playing more golf with my friends and family”, comments Smyers.
Steve first started serving the USGA on the Mid-Am Committee in 1985. He was awarded the Ike Grainger Award in 2011, which honors recipients achieving 25 Years of USGA Volunteer Service.
