Feb. 9, 2012 - PRLog -- Washington, DC (February 9, 2012) - Anne Ferro, Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and Ron Medford, Deputy Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), have agreed to join representatives of the American School Bus Council (ASBC) at a “Love the Bus” event in Sunderland, MD at Sunderland Elementary School on February 21st, from 8:30AM to 10AM.

A “Love the Bus” event is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about the importance of school bus transportation.  The humble yellow school bus is an integral component of American education, providing access to school for more than 26 million students every day.  Along with its safety record, it also reduces pollution (new federal standards have resulted in a 96% improvement in school bus engine emissions since 1994) and offers congestion mitigation benefits.

This year, the national event on February 21st will provide a strong human interest story—elementary age students will give handmade valentines to their school bus drivers and paste “lips” on their bus to show their appreciation for this bus driver.  In addition to the national event, schools and communities from Virginia to Utah will also hold Love the Bus events.  For more information on events in your state, please contact info@lovethebus.com

About “Love the Bus”

“Love the Bus”, launched in 2007, is a project to raise awareness about school bus safety and show appreciation for the hundreds of thousands of school bus drivers who make yellow school buses the largest and safest transportation system in the country; according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, students are 8 times more likely to arrive at school alive if they take the school bus rather than if they drive or ride with their friends or parents.

Those interested in supporting the “Love the Bus” project can visit www.lovethebus.com and download a variety of materials that explain why the yellow school bus is an American icon—the critical link between a child’s home and classroom.  Over many decades, this efficient transportation system has been a pillar of public education, getting children to and from school and providing a valuable service to parents who depend on its reliability and safety.  School buses have the best safety record in the transportation industry thanks to thousands of professionals coast-to-coast who are dedicated to the highest level of performance.
