Feb. 8, 2012 - PRLog -- Island Dolphin Care, Inc. (IDC) is a program developed to help children with special needs and their families who are dealing with developmental and/or physical disabilities, emotional challenges, and critical, chronic or terminal illness. IDC hosts many workshops and events helping children with disabilities and illnesses, along with their parents and family members. The Sensory Smart Strategies For Real-Life Challenges takes place February 15, 2012 from 7:00 pm to 9 pm and tickets are available for $50 and include an autographed copy of the book “Raising a Sensory Smart Child.”

Sensory processing is how people transform sensory information from within their own bodies and the external environment into messages to act on. All senses (touch, sight, sound, movement, body awareness, taste, and smell) work together to give people a reliable picture of the world. Sensory issues affect all kinds of people, from those with developmental delays, attention and learning problems, autistic disorders and other diagnostic issues. Common signs of sensory processing problems are:

-Bothered by clothing fabrics, labels, tags, etc.
-Distressed by light touch or unexpected touch
-Dislikes getting messy
-Resists grooming activities
-Very sensitive to sounds (volume or frequency)
-Squints, blinks, or rubs eye frequently
-Bothered by lights or patterns
-High activity level or very sedentary
-Unusually high or low pain threshold

This workshop is dedicated to family members, friends and adults involved with children who have sensory processing issues that interfere with daily life. Lindsey Biel, OTR/L, co-author of the award winning “Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with Sensory Processing Issues”, with a foreword by Temple Grandin, will be leading the workshop. The evening will consist of:

-Insights on how sensory problems affect a person at home, at school, and in the community.
-Fun “sensory diet” activities that will help the child feel and function better all day long.
-Practical strategies for daily life challenges such as oversensitivity to noise, clothing,  smell, light, picky eating, poor sleep and more.
