Feb. 7, 2012 - PRLog -- (SAVANNAH, GA) – Horizons Savannah is proud to host its Second Annual “Honoring an Educator” Gala and Silent Auction on March 2, 2012. This year’s honoree will be Ms. Paula Wallace, the Co-Founder and President of the Savannah College of Art and Design. Tickets are now on sale online for this prestigious event at http://horizonssavannah.org/.

Involved with SCAD since its founding in 1979, Ms. Wallace has expanded the world-renowned university for the arts far beyond its origins in Savannah, creating four new campuses and programs since 2002 alone: SCAD Atlanta, SCAD Lacoste in France, SCAD Hong Kong and SCAD eLearning. Named one of the "100 Most Influential Georgians" by Georgia Trend magazine and an "Outstanding Georgia Citizen" by the Georgia Secretary of State, Ms. Wallace has never been honored on a local level by her peers in the Savannah educational community. Horizons is thrilled to be the first to recognize Ms. Wallace’s contributions to education, both here and around the world.

Horizons Savannah Executive Director Christy Edwards says, ”This event is sure to be one of the highlights of the season, and will help raise much-needed funds for our cause of closing the achievement gap for underserved children in Savannah.” Horizons Savannah Board President Tom Oxnard adds, "Ms. Wallace is well-known throughout Savannah, Georgia, the US and the world as an educational innovator, and we are proud to honor her in this way."

About Horizons Savannah:

Recognized as one of America’s best summer learning programs, Horizons at Savannah Country Day School welcomes about 150 low-income, public elementary and middle school students each summer to a six-week summer enrichment program that helps prevent “summer slide”: the loss-of-learning that occurs during the summer. By providing a safe and nurturing environment, recreational and cultural activities, nutritious meals and snacks, caring professional teachers and creative, challenging instruction, we unlock a student’s potential to achieve. Last summer, students gained an average of three months’ growth in reading and four months growth in math.
