Work Experience and Vocational Training Opportunities

Research by Dr Anthony Mann for the Education and Employers Taskforce suggests that the more young people come into contact with employers while they are at school, the less likely they are to become unemployed.

Feb. 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Work experience is intended to provide an insight and some experience in to the world of work. The 10 day experience is long established and builds a partnership between schools and employers.

Christine Brown of Christine Brown & Associates comments” For most young people this will be a good experience with most placements offering a valuable insight to both the job and working life generally.  Schools have a statuary requirement to provide work related learning and fulfil this requirement by offering a work placement, but in some cases not  enough attention is placed on what exactly the young person will do, endless photo copying, running errands making the tea, whilst we all recognise these jobs have to be done and often by the junior person present, but  schools should also ensure that some real work will  take place, some exposure to responsibility and where appropriate - contact with customers, as young people usually choose their placement based on what industry they would like to work”.

“Schools have lists of placement supplies, and I wonder how many of the placements result in job openings or even part time Saturday jobs. Employers, through work placements offer a really good opportunity to advice and influence development of the school curriculum and therefore add benefit to all work based training. It is so important for young people to have the opportunity to gain as much knowledge about work and the avenues open to them, not only for work but also for the choices they have on further and higher education” says Christine.

This comes after the Wolf report on vocational training published last week and the recommendation to withdraw some of the more flamboyant  and quirky  qualifications and add more emphasis on those qualifications that will be useful in getting a job .
