Study Finds Common Chemicals May Make Childhood Vaccines Less Effective

Jan. 31, 2012 - PRLog -- A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association claims that certain vaccines may not work properly in children who have been exposed to high levels of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs)—which are found in microwave popcorn bags, carpets, nonstick cookware, and water-resistant clothing, and countless other everyday products.

The research indicated that children who had higher concentrations of PFCs in their blood also demonstrated lower immune responses to diphtheria and tetanus vaccinations. This finding is worrisome, because a child can still get a disease if he or she has an insufficient immune response despite being vaccinated.

Past research indicates that PFCs are harmful to animals and therefore are most likely dangerous to humans. They are absorbed into food and do not break down over time, leading to their accumulation in the bloodstream.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is concerned about these chemicals and has begun the lengthy regulation process.
