Champion Hurdle Betting - Cheltenham Festival

The current champion hurdler Hurricane Fly returned to the track for the first time this season with a stunning victory in the BHP Insuracnce Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown – a course he’s now four-from-four at!

Jan. 30, 2012 - PRLog -- After the race Willie Mullins’ charge was cut to evens from 7-4 by Paddy Power and William Hill for the Champion Hurdle in March, while BetVictor offered 10-11.

Hurricane Fly was fairly weak in the betting, eventually returning 4/5, as all the pre-race money was for Dermot Weld’s classy mare Unaccompanied.

However, the deep underfoot conditions didn’t seem to suit Unaccomanied as she always looked in trouble and eventually trailed in around 40 lengths adrift of Hurricane Fly in fourth place – on better ground she’s sure to get a lot closer, while being only 5 years-old has plenty of time to still make her mark.

Hurricane Fly’s stablemate Thousand Stars made most of the running, but made a bad mistake just before turning for home which put pay to his chance, he did, however, do well to plug on to take third – around 10 lengths behind the winner – he’s sure to be seen in much better light over further as the season progresses.

After his win, Willie Mullins, confessed to being shocked. It is a complete surprise to me how well he did it, he said.

My first reaction is it might be his best ever performance.

It’s relief to have that over, said Mullins. I hoped he’d win but you never know when they’ve been off for such a long time.

I hope he didn’t have too hard a race as the ground was very gruelling, but we have six weeks to Cheltenham and that should give us plenty of time.
