History of Jamestown Told Through Vintage Postcards

Local author pens new book on this historic settlement in the Colony of Virginia.

Jan. 30, 2012 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Postcard History series is Jamestown from local author Catherine E. Dean. The book boasts more than 200 vintage postcards and memories of days gone by.

In May 1607, three ships arrived at Jamestown bearing settlers who would establish the first enduring English colony in North America. Although it initially struggled to survive, the settlement eventually prospered and became the capital of Virginia.

Jamestown is best known for its inhabitants John Smith and Pocahontas; however, it should also be remembered for its role in the establishment of the English language, Protestant faith, and representative government in America. The site of the 1607 James Fort and 17th-century city have been preserved through the efforts of Preservation Virginia and the National Park Service.

A popular tourist destination since the 19th century, Historic Jamestowne has welcomed millions of visitors over the years, many of whom attended the 1907 Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition and the 1957 Jamestown Festival, which celebrated Jamestown’s important legacy as America’s birthplace.

Highlights of Jamestown:
•   All profits from the sales of the book support the non-profit mission of Preservation Virginia.
•   The book provides a nostalgic look at Jamestown’s 250th anniversary celebration in 1957 including the development of car culture in the Historic Triangle.
•   Also included are the recent discoveries of Dr. William Kelso and the Historic Jamestowne archaeological staff.

Author Catherine E. Dean, curator of collections, has selected the best images from Preservation Virginia’s extensive archival collection for Postcard History: Jamestown. Together, they tell the fascinating story of Jamestown’s history from the 17th century to the present day.
