Jan. 27, 2012 - PRLog -- Dozens of water-damaged toys had to be thrown away after the theft above a newly decorated playroom at Malcolm Sargent House in Prestwick, Ayrshire.

The charity CLIC Sargent, which runs the centre, was left with a £15,000 bill to repair the roof even though the stolen lead was worth just £500 as scrap metal.

Now PID Systems, based at Barr Thomson Business Park, which manufactures and supplies portable roof alarms, has offered  to supply and install one of its unique security systems free of charge to ensure there can be no repeat of the theft.

The system is wireless and so doesn’t need to be connected to the mains and can be installed quickly and easily. As well as sounding when an intruder is detected, it sends a signal to the owner of the building, to PID Systems and it also captures any attempted theft on video.

Gordon McIntyre, a director of PID systems, said: “We were shocked to learn about the appalling action of thieves who have left Malcolm Sargent House with a £15,000 repair bill.

“CLIC Sargent is a tremendously worthwhile charity which does a wonderful job in making the lives of young cancer sufferers a little happier. As a local business, we are delighted to help it in its hour of need.”

He added: “Metal theft is a huge problem and we come across this kind of crime day in day out. This shows how indiscriminate these thieves have been in selecting their victims and that, for them, a children’s charity is obviously fair game. Sadly, many scrap merchants are prepared to buy and resell large quantities of metals with no questions asked.

“Our alarm system will help Malcolm Sargent House to ensure there is no repeat of this wicked act. If anyone tries, the proper authorities will be alerted immediately and the thieves caught on film.”

PID systems alarms are devised particularly with of this kind of problem in mind. There has been a massive rise in metals theft, prompted by a hike in global cost. The price of copper rose from £889-a-tonne in November 2001, to a high of £6,356-a-tonne, recorded last year. According to HM Revenue and Customs, an estimated 10,000 incidents of metal theft every year costs the UK economy more than £5.6billion in lost revenue.

Until recently there was little choice between putting an expensive and often inefficient manned guard in place and doing nothing. Lack of electricity or telephone lines often meant it was not possible to install a traditional wired-in alarm system in many buildings and outside locations.

In response to that need PID Systems designed and manufactured a range of vandal resistant, portable wireless intruder detection systems for safeguarding empty buildings and outdoor areas.

It specialises in protecting lead/copper roofs, vehicle parking areas, storage yards, open surface mines and electricity sub-stations. Because its systems don’t require mains services they are suitable for a whole range of applications where traditional alarm systems can’t work. I’ve attached a link to the company’s website.
