Jan. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- Suntrek Industries, Inc. of Irvine, California played a key role in facilitating a McDonalds restaurant at 2242 University Avenue in Riverside, CA to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification. Suntrek Industries worked directly with Candice and Tom Spiel, who own and operate this particular McDonalds, to permit this facility to become the first LEED certified McDonalds west of the Mississippi.

Phil DelNegro, Vice President of Sales and Operations for Suntrek Industries was on site for the event and had this to say: “The commitment to green energy is summarized in every aspect of this building project. McDonalds and Suntrek partnered on key aspects of the design and installation to develop a finished project deserving of all accolades and recognition. It is a moment for which both companies should be proud.”

LEED is the U.S. Green Building council’s rating system for designing and constructing the worlds greenest, most energy efficient and high performing buildings. The criteria for satisfying a LEED certification include sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Candice and Tom Spiel have owned this McDonalds for 44 years, and completely rebuilt their restaurant in 2010 to contain the features that made the LEED certification possible. Phil DelNegro, President and CEO of Suntrek Industries, call Candice and Tom Spiel “pillars of the community and exemplary business leaders.” He continues, “It was an honor to work with entrepreneurs of such stature, drive, and vision. Achieving LEED Certification for their McDonald’s restaurant is a tribute not only to their business acumen, but also to their environmental stewardship.”

Suntrek Industries served as a leader in the redesign process, which saved the environment in both electrical and water usage. Suntrek’s photovoltaic efforts saved approximately 8,950 kWH per month of utility usage, equal to the power of 13 average sized homes since the system was made active in October.  Phil DelNegro believes “Suntrek’s commitment to the environment through its ‘Power of Three’ product offering allows customers like McDonalds to implement long-term and sustainable energy programs and solutions.”

As far as water efficiency, Suntrek’s contribution to the Riverside McDonalds saved approximately 250,000 gallons of water, equal to the water that would fill eight 20 ft x 40 ft swimming pools. Roy Heine continues, “Managing Suntrek’s leadership solar energy project for McDonald’s – Riverside was a truly rewarding professional experience. It was a privilege to be part of the innovative and focused design, engineering, and construction teams.” Without Suntrek’s continued efforts on all aspects of this project, Riverside’s LEED certification would not have been possible. With the innovative minds of Candice and Tom Spiel along with the initiative of Suntrek, this Riverside McDonalds will certainly set the tone for green innovations for not only McDonalds but other corporations in the future.
