PRLog -- MedImmune, a subsidiary of pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, was founded in 1988 by Wayne T. Hockmeyer. The firm originated in Gaithersburg, Maryland and has remained there after the buyout by AstraZeneca in 2007. While a relatively young company by traditional standards, MedImmune has established itself as an innovation leader in the vaccine industry with two highly successful vaccines: Synagis and Flu Mist. These two vaccines are the lifeblood of the company, as Synagis accounted for nearly 90% of the company's revenue and FluMist almost the remaining 10%. With that in mind, the success of these vaccines should come as no surprise as the details of each are described below:
1. Synagis:
The respiratory syncytial virus is particular dangerous for infants as it can cause the development of bronchiolitis, croup, ear infections, and pneumonia. While the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) may simply cause a cold in older children, infants, especially premature and those with chronic lung or congenital heart disease are considered to be high risk for the aforementioned conditions. Synagis is designed to prevent RSV infections by targeting the fusion protein of RSV and inhibiting its entry into the cell. The vaccine is administered intramuscularly on a monthly basis throughout the duration of RSV season (typically October through May.)
2. FluMist:
If there is one thing many children and adults both have in common is a fear and dislike of shots. Due to this fear, many people, young and old, avoid a flu vaccine each season despite the obvious health risks. MedImmune answered this problem with FluMist. FluMist is a live virus vaccine that is sprayed into the nose to help protect against influenza. It can be used in children, adolescents, and adults ages 2 through 49. While FluMist is a great alternative for anyone looking to prevent influenza, it is especially important for young children and those in the healthcare industry to make sure they are vaccinated. As flu vaccine is the one most often declined by Americans, FluMist hopes to help change that!
While MedImmune may not be the biggest vaccine company or have the largest product offering, its two main vaccines fill a unique segment in the industry and do a great deal to help keep our population healthy. With Synagis, MedImmune has done a great deal to help protect infants from RSV and through FluMist, has encouraged many people previously fearful flu shots to become vaccinated.
