Follow on Google News | ![]() Greenspoint Gives Back: Aviation Career Awareness Day at the MoviesOver 300 middle and high school students from Houston and Aldine ISD attended the premiere of the highly anticipated movie Red Tails. The Greenspoint Gives Back Community Initiative of NHBA also featured an Aviation Career Awareness Camp.
The George Lucas film, Red Tails, tells the story of the America's first Black military airmen and how they overcame adversity to promote equality in the armed forces. Most notably, they successfully completed their missions escorting heavy bombers with an impeccable record. The event was hosted by Premiere Renaissnce Cinemas at Greenspoint mall. “The movie served as a platform for a mini Aviation camp which included exhibits and representatives from the aviation industry,” said Fernell Hogan NHBA Community Relations Manager. Over 20 aviation professionals, including pilots, flight attendants, aircraft maintenance technicians, catering managers, educators, and military personnel were available to speak to the students about the various career opportunities available in the the field of aviation. Xavier Samuels, a United Airlines pilot, lead the panel of aviation professionals in discussions of what the movie meant to them and how an aviation career has impacted their lives. Mr. Samuels is the Southwest Regional Vice President of OBAP. City Councilman Jerry Davis, stopped by to encourage the students to pursue their dreams and seek out the assistance of political representatives with their future endeavors. The students were also addressed by Mario Diaz, Director of the City of Houston Department of Aviation. Mr. Diaz spoke of the importance of education and never taking “No” for an answer. The focus on aviation awareness continues into the month of February with OBAP's Pilots and Professionals in Schools project. Visiting Houston area schools, the project provides entry level exposure to career possibilities with real life aviation/aerospace professionals.
