Carl Hiaasen Keynote Speaker at Feathers and Friends Gala 2012 on February 9

Tickets are available to see Carl Hiaasen, celebrated author, investigative reporter, and environmentalist, at the Feathers & Friends Gala, presented by Collier County Audubon Society and Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

Jan. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- Join celebrated author, investigative reporter, columnist and environmentalist, Carl Hiaasen at the Feathers & Friends Gala on Thursday, February 9, at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club, 851 Gulf Shore Boulevard North.

This year’s Feathers and Friends Gala provides an opportunity to hear Hiaasen’s unique perspective as a Florida native and environmental advocate. Hiaasen grew up on the edge of Florida’s Everglades in the city of Plantation, where he spent his childhood enjoying the natural beauty of the mangrove swamps and freshwater lagoons. Over the decades he watched these areas and many others in Florida change through development. Since joining the Miami Herald in 1976, Hiaasen has spoken out through his column and bestselling novels which frequently involve dirty development deals, corruption and political scandals. Hiaasen says most of his characters and storylines are stolen from headlines or contemporary situations.

The format for the evening will include hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction at 6:30 with dinner and Carl Hiaasen to follow at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $125 per person and proceeds will benefit Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the Collier County Audubon Society. For more information about tickets and sponsorships, please contact Lori Beall, (239) 643-7822 or email audubon@collieraudubon.org.

More Information:

Collier County Audubon Society (CCAS) is an independent chapter of National Audubon Society and Audubon of Florida. Currently celebrating their 50th anniversary season, CCAS is oldest conservation organization in the county.  CCAS is one of the most effective environmental policy and lobbying organizations in Southwest Florida.  CCAS co-sponsors environmental education for thousands of third and fourth graders in public schools and conducts an extracurricular Audubon Young Birders program.  In addition, the Society sponsors public lectures during season and conducts field trips to birding “hot spots” in Collier and neighboring counties. For more information visit http://www.collieraudubon.org.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is considered the “jewel in the crown” of the National Audubon Society. For over 100 years, this area east of Naples has been protected by Audubon wardens providing a safe haven for birds, wildlife and the largest stand of old growth cypress trees in North America. Today, 13,000 acres of habitats are managed by Audubon staff. Over 100,000 visitors are welcomed each year to explore the 2.25-mile boardwalk trail.  An invaluable outdoor classroom, Corkscrew presents environmental education programs for over 4,000 students annually.
