1st Baby Born At Northside Hospital Conceived After daVinci Robotic Tubal Ligation Reversal Surgery

Jan. 21, 2012 - PRLog -- The first baby conceived just two months following a daVinci robotic tubal ligation reversal surgery was delivered at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on January 18, 2012 by Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Dr. Michael Randell, who also performed the reversal surgery.

More than 650,000 women undergo permanent sterilization procedures (tubal ligation or Essure) in the United States each year.  Studies show that within five years of having the procedure to permanently end their ability to have children, approximately twenty percent of women will express regret about having had the procedure, and five to ten percent of these women will decide to have the procedure reversed to have a baby.

Currently, most tubal ligation and Essure reversal procedures are performed through an open incision in the abdomen using microsurgical techniques.  The problems with this approach include up to a two day hospital stay, six to eight weeks of recovery, and greater need for pain medications.

Dr. Randell, Georgia's leader in gynecologic robotic surgery, is the only gynecologic surgeon at Northside Hospital in Atlanta who performs the reversal procedure using the daVinci robot.

"Most women are unaware of the newest surgical techniques available to them to reverse their tubal ligation," said Dr. Randell.  "Today, with the use of the daVinci robot, women can have their tubals reversed or their Essure implants removed through a few small incisions.  This allows for quick healing, less pain, and a return to normal activity soon after the surgery."
