These two acts are recently-developed bills proposed in US Congress, supposedly with the intention of curbing online piracy and protecting intellectual property. However, these bills have recently stirred up a storm of controversy, due to concern that they may have sweeping negative effects on a wide variety of websites, which has culminated in wide-scale blackouts in protest of them. RateTea's opposition to SOPA and PIPA: Official statement: http://ratetea.com/ On the same day of Wikipedia's wide-scale blackout, RateTea has added a black banner to the header of their website, displayed on every page of the site, announcing their opposition to these acts. RateTea has stopped short of a full blackout; the site is still fully available and fully functional, but the banner is prominently visible from every page and will remain so through the day. RateTea's official statement urges people to visit Wikipedia's resources to learn more about these acts, and urges registered voters in the US to contact their representatives about them.
