Jan. 17, 2012 - PRLog -- BIG ARTS will screen Puccini’s Il trittico Thursday, February 9, at 7 p.m. in BIG ARTS Schein Performance Hall, 900 Dunlop Road. The screening is part of its Emerging Pictures Opera and Ballet in Cinema Series, a new program in which live and pre-recorded opera and ballet performances are screened on Sanibel via satellite from the world’s most distinguished theaters. Admission is $20, children under 17 are free.

Puccini’s Il trittico is a collection of three one-act operas, Il tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, the third of which, a farce full of greed and conniving, is the most popular and performed opera of the set. The operas premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in December 1918 and received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The performance that will screen at BIG ARTS was captured live from a recent performance at The Royal Opera House in London.
Il tabarro explores the dangerous nature of infidelity and how jealousy can ultimately lead a man to commit the most serious act of vengeance. Suor Angelica tells the tale of Sister Angelica, a nun sent by her family to the convent as punishment for giving birth to an illegitimate child. But when a relative arrives to inform her that her child has died, Angelica considers the most drastic of measures in an attempt to be reunited. Gianni Schicchi sees its greedy characters rewrite a deceased family member’s will so as to maintain an estate to which a local church is bequeathed.
BIG ARTS has upgraded its digital projection system this season, using the same equipment used by Pixar, NFL and Disney Studios. All Opera & Ballet in Cinema screenings are presented in surround sound and high-definition. Emerging Pictures is the largest all-digital Specialty Film and Alternate Content theater network in the United States.

Emerging has a network of arts institutions, media arts centers and independent art house theaters, tied together through digital technology – enabling them to cost effectively exhibit art films, documentaries, foreign language films, independent cinema and cultural programming.
