Southern writer Patty Roper brings Easy Does It tips to masses

She is known, through her books and magazine article, for using a classic, practical approach to entertaining. Effortless elegance revealed in beautiful photography and outstanding recipes have been compiled in her latest book, Easy Does It: Winners and Favorites.  

This book focuses on Roper’s belief that “As southerners, many memories are created around the table sharing food and fellowship with people we love. Traditions are made and kept with family and friends and passed to the next generations through time-tested recipes.”     

“Thanksgiving and Christmas would not be the same without sweet potatoes, cranberries, and cornbread dressing prepared from grandmother’s recipes. Chocolate and pecan pies and iced layer cakes, prepared by certain family members, always take their place on the sideboard. Roper explains, “We look forward to the familiarity of favorite tastes and aromas of special gatherings, just as we cherish our family connections. Our heritage is richly steeped in an association of family, friends, and food.”

Easy Does It: Winners and Favorites is a collection of these favorite recipes. Many are winners of recipe contests and were created for special occasions or for special people. The Coconut Pound Cake, a grand-prize recipe contest winner, is a cake that mother and daughter Peggy Shivers and Susan Lott take to friends in times of need. Lime Freeze was created by Joan Ferguson for her niece’s bridesmaids’ luncheon. Some are recipes shared by accomplished cooks, chefs, and restaurants, and others are quick-and-easy favorites.

Roper’s book offers guidance for a variety of event planning, whether it is a formal dinner with many courses before an extraordinary entrée ending with an over-the-top dessert, or just having friends over for chicken salad with pimiento cheese sandwiches, or looking for cookies and candies for teachers and neighbors.  Astonishing photographs in delightful settings display much more than just great food. Roper is editorial director of Mississippi Magazine, a bimonthly lifestyle publication with emphasis on homes and entertainment. Roper’s hugely popular Easy Does It departments have generated a devoted following during its 18-year run by offering innovative ways to make every occasion special with minimal effort and expense. “I like to show my readers the best of the old and the new, including tried-and-true Southern recipes paired with the latest culinary delights, and excellent entertaining and decorating how-to’s,” said Roper.

Quail Ridge Press was started in 1978 when Barney McKee brought home a cookbook manuscript that the University Press couldn't publish. His wife, Gwen McKee, thought The Twelve Days of Christmas Cookbook was too cute and clever to pass up.
