Thrill Seekers Get High on Adrenal Literature
Today's adventurers stay in the saddle at work and home by turning the pages of pulse-pounding fiction and true-life adventure.
"Literature buffs aren't usually your cliche pasty-faced bookworms," says FreeFlight Publishing. "As often as not they're action people who come inside on a Sunday night or at season's end but can't quite kick the adrenalin habit. They drum their fingers on the desk at work, wondering what to sink their teeth into until the next big wall climb or off-trail ski outing or cross-country hang gliding flight. They often break out the eBook reader or tablet PC and turn to literary accounts of real-life adventures, or tense suspense fiction, to keep the juices flowing."
As examples, they cite a representative pair of prime boredom fighters: mystery-suspense thriller "ARCHANGEL" by Michael Vorhis, and true-life adventure "SWIMMING WITH CROCODILES" by Will Chaffey. Each has earned a loyal and expanding following, and each appears more than able to keep people who can't sit down glued to a chair.
Author Will Chaffey has had nightmares about cold-blooded predators ever since the episode that inspired his book. "I was lucky to make it out alive," he admits, recalling others mentioned who were less fortunate. Five-year project SWIMMING WITH CROCODILES chronicles his prolonged outback ordeal in spellbinding style, something no ordinary wilderness survival primer could pull off. Arcade Publishing compares it to Jon Krakauer's "Into The Wild," and points out the ubiquitous presence of "the awesome, unforgiving power of nature." The Sunday Telegraph comments, “Chaffey elevates a tale of survival and adventure into a beautifully written meditation on the beauty of the natural world in a unique country.” Readers applaud the straightforward style, the generous twists of humor, and above all the page-by-page journey through the random turns of fate and life-and-death decisions that characterize this true account.
Considering the uber-remote environs and the appalling weave of poisonous snakes, strangely powerful stinging plants, a serial murderer, lightning bolts, the burning sun, extreme hunger and a stalking lizard, it's no wonder that adventure lovers gravitate to this book.
Similarly, FreeFlight Publishing says ARCHANGEL by Michael Vorhis owes its impressive climb to a universally intriguing plot, deft literary execution, and "a hero who inspires." Noted author and publisher Emily Hill of A.V.Harrison Publishing commented last year, "Vorhis more than holds his own. He has style...the presence, and skill, to stir in the most three dimensional characters any debut novelist has a right to claim." Author Robert DeCoteau describes the work as, "a class five hurricane...sheer storytelling genius...takes fiction from good to great." Readers have even said the debut novel has rekindled their interest in fiction.
"Action junkies and serious adventurers are in fact educated, discerning readers, and they want quality," points out Vorhis, who spent eleven years in the creation of ARCHANGEL. "They still expect a character-driven story. They want to be tantalized with great suspense, the undercurrent of forbidden romance, beauty, heroic deeds...it all gets the pulse going, it all thrills the soul."
