January is National Get Organized Month! Organize Online Passwords with Help from Gooseberry Patch

Start off the new year on the right foot by organizing and securing your online passwords with the help of Gooseberry Patch's Online Organizer
Jan. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- The number of people who go online to do everything from banking to shopping is on the rise. Unfortunately, so is the occurrence of unscrupulous people trying to gain access to those personal details, such as user names and passwords.

Experts say that one effective way to fend off these information thieves is to never ever use the same password for more than one website.

"Many of us go to a dozen or even more websites every day," says Vickie Hutchins, co-founder of Gooseberry Patch, a Columbus, Ohio-based publisher best known for its series of bestselling cookbooks and art calendars. "It's important to have unique passwords for all these sites, but it can certainly be a challenge to remember them all!"

"That's why we designed the Online Organizer...to help simplify and keep track of online details. It's a simple tool that allows you to organize e-mail addresses, websites, passwords and user names all in one place," says Jo Ann Martin, co-founder of Gooseberry Patch."And its small size makes it easy to tuck in a secure place in your home."

Ready to get started? Here are some steps you can take to create new, strong and unique passwords for all the websites you visit, courtesy of Microsoft.com.

--Make your passwords long, with eight or more characters.

--Include letters, punctuation, symbols and numbers. Use the entire keyboard, not just the letters and characters you use or see most often.

--Change passwords often. Set an automatic reminder for yourself to change your passwords on your e-mail, banking and credit card websites every three months.

--Don't use the same password for everything. Cyber-criminals steal passwords on websites that have very little security, and then they use that same password and user name in more secure environments, such as banking websites.

--Avoid creating passwords that use:
  Dictionary words in any language.
Words spelled backwards, common misspellings and abbreviations.
Sequences or repeated characters; for example: 12345678, 222222, abcdefg, or adjacent letters on your keyboard.
Personal information, such as your name, birthday, driver's license, passport number or similar information.

Back in 1984, Vickie Hutchins and Jo Ann Martin were next-door neighbors raising their families in Delaware, Ohio. They were two moms with small children looking for a way to do what they loved and stay home with the kids too. They shared a love of home cooking and making memories with family & friends. After many a conversation over the backyard fence, Gooseberry Patch was born.

Today, Gooseberry Patch is best known for its homestyle family-friendly cookbooks and line of art calendars. With more than 200 titles and nearly 9 million copies in print, plus a new collection of eBooks, Gooseberry Patch has grown from a kitchen-table operation to a nationally recognized best-selling publisher. Affordably priced from 99 cents to $16.95, the books are themed with today's time-strapped, budget-conscious families in mind. Many recipes include personal stories from contributors, giving the cookbooks a warm community feel that has proven extremely popular among cookbook fans and collectors.
