By: Steve Falk “We are a nation of barn raisers.” – Governor General David Johnston New Year’s Message December 28, 2011 On November 14, 2011 Brian and Sue Feddema of Round The Bend Farm were devastated to watch their two barns burn to the ground. The Kettleby area landmark has been a beloved farm destination for families throughout the GTA since 1986. Two 100-ft barns were destroyed in the fierce night-time blaze, along with 1500 turkeys destined for the holiday season. In the end, the Feddemas lost their barns, turkeys, refrigeration and farm tools. As word of the story spread, residents throughout York Region responded with sympathy and requests on how to lend a hand. Area residents Steve Falk and Walter Karabin were reminiscing about trips to the farm with their families just after the tragedy when they decided to stage a fundraiser to help the family. Mr. Falk is part of Aurora’s popular Thursday Night Jam Band, a 12-piece R&B and Motown dance band. Together with King businessman Walter Karabin, they are pleased to present Raise the Barn 4 Round The Bend Farm Fundraising Dance on Friday, January 27 at 8 pm at The Manor Event Centre at Carrying Place Golf Course. Township of King Mayor Steve Pellegrini has enthusiastically agreed to act as Honourary Chair of the fundraiser. Tickets are $50, and include a selection of substantial hors d’oeuvres, a pasta bar and saganaki station, along with live entertainment donated by The Thursday Night Jam. With guitars, percussion, a trio of singers and a full horn section, audiences will dance the night away to a potent mix of hits by Stevie Wonder, James Brown, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye and many more! A silent auction and raffle will round out the festivities; evening will be turned over directly the Feddema Family in their efforts to recover from the tragedy.
