How to Reset the OBD Service Engine Soon Light on a 99 Silverado

Jan. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- All cars manufactured in 1996 or later come with an On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD) computer. I think you will see a "Service Engine Soon" light illuminate on the dashboard of your 1999 Chevrolet Silverado when it needs routine maintenance or something wrong with the car. You need to do the maintenance and repair or have it done by a qualified and professional mechanic before you try to retrieve the light. You can do it yourself at home using an OBD 2 car code reader or you can take it to your local car parts store and have them erase the code for you.
You'll Need OBD 2 car code reader for this job.
Put the ignition key in the Silverado and turn it to the "On" position. But keep in mind do not power on the engine.
Find out the Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC), it is generally under the steering column and insert in the OBD 2 code reader. The Silverado's battery will power and turn on the OBD 2 code reader.
Find the arrows on the OBD 2 code reader and use them to scroll through the menu until you see the command item, "Read Codes." Choose this option.
Wait for several second, the code will display on the screen, then Read the codes and write them down on a piece of paper. Disconnect the code reader and take the car and the piece of paper with the codes you just written down to your mechanic. Ask for the mechanic fix the car.
Plug the code reader back into the DLC port when you return home. Repeat the Steps above.
Use the arrow keys to navigate the menu until you find "Erase Codes," or other similar option then press "Enter."
Power on the engine and examine the dashboard to make sure the "Service Engine Soon" light has turned off.
