Jan. 5, 2012 - PRLog -- Even without snowfall so far this season, the beautiful winter birds have made their way to Kansas City. On any given day, beautiful cardinals, blue birds, holly and finch can be spotted on roadside posts and backyard landscape features. One way to attract beautiful winter birds is through a properly placed bird feeder and the right food.

"Landscaping and backyard planning doesn’t have to stop during winter. Use a bird feeder to attract beautiful birds and continue enjoying the backyard all year long,” said Tim Brown, owner of OlympicLawn.net.

Winterizing Your Bird Feeder
Birds tend to enjoy feeders the most in the summer and winter months. To winterize a bird feeder, make sure it’s placed in a location where any snowfall will not obstruct the opening for the food. It can go practically anywhere in the backyard – from a stand-alone post to hanging from tree branches and under awnings. Use a mixed seed to provide proper nutrition for the birds; breadcrumbs do not provide the nutrients the birds require. In addition, mix a little bit of sand or grit with the seed to aid the birds’ digestion. If the feeder has a bowl for water, check to ensure it’s not frozen so the birds receive proper hydration.

“Lawn work and landscaping can take a lot of time – caring for a bird feeder doesn’t take hardly any time at all. It’s an easy, enjoyable way to experience Mother Nature’s finest even when it’s cold outside,” said Brown.
