During this same period, there was a common belief that every child had the capability to become an inventor/ innovator, like Henry Ford, George Washington Carver, Madame C J Walker, Thomas Edison, Sarah Mather and Nikola Tesla, to change our world. Detroit led the country with its inventive spirit. But something happened, its k-12 schools no longer incubated inventions. School leadership decided it no longer had the responsibility to cater to corporate employment needs. Consequently, innovation and invention has become the sole responsibility of corporate R &D departments. Yet, everyone keeps chanting students need more STEAM, - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. However, schools have taught Science, Technology, and Mathematics for multiple decades without sparking innovation, invention or engineering. I personally had 9 semesters of science, 8 semesters of mathematics and 4 semesters of technology before high school graduation in 1984. Even with more STEM classes students to hate science. Their hatred has turned America into the poorest performer amongst industrialized nations in science and mathematics. Students do not need more STEM- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics classes -, they need immersion in the invention/innovation design process. They need more hands-on multidisciplinary education to promote invention and design. .
