By: dubaicityinfo.com Covering an area of 1,500 square feet, the 76-seat Coffee Planet café is located in Shah Alam, the modern upmarket state capital of Selangor province, near the capital Kuala Lumpur. Situated in the heart of a thriving community, the café is set to become a focal point on the local social scene with a university, extensive commercial facilities and large residential population close by. “We saw Malaysia as a natural fit as the location for our first café outside of the GCC due to its trend-setting reputation within the region and gateway destination into Asia. We felt that the youthfulness and modern design elements of the brand would also match the market demographic and give us a foothold in the region with ample opportunity for future growth; and we have already had enquiries from Japan and South Korea,” said Richard Jones, Managing Director, Coffee Planet. “One of our primary objectives in launching Coffee Planet was to create an exportable brand. There is an absence of homegrown brands translating well out of the UAE where the culture of importing big overseas franchise brands has impeded originality. We really wanted to break that trend and create something with strong regional roots, but with equally relevant international appeal,” added Jones. Coffee Planet plans three further store openings in Malaysia in 2012, as well as a further ten cafés and kiosks in operation in the UAE by the end of next year. Coffee Planet rose to prominence through its hugely successful ‘on the go’ express coffee machines located in over 150 ADNOC and ENOC/EPPCO petrol stations throughout the UAE. “Our business model has developed from a simple self service convenience store product back in 2005, into a sophisticated brand with global franchise potential. The launch of our first international outlet is the start of a planned rollout into key strategic locations from the UAE to Asia and Russia,” said Jones. Coffee Planet operates its own state-of-the- The design of the Shah Alam outlet replicates the company’s UAE venues down to the café’s trademark IT hub, but also incorporates a number of local design elements that reflect different aspects of Malaysian culture. “Each Coffee Planet café will have the same signature buzz, the same great coffee, but we also want our franchise partners to bring in an element of their own individuality, creating unique venues under the brand umbrella, not just generic copies of the original,” remarked Jones. Indeed the opening had a touch of contemporary Malaysian culture and glamour with singing star Yuna performing several songs from her new album to an audience of 150 specially invited guests.
