Follow on Google News | Metalsmith Challenges Artists to Make a “Super” BowlEvery year on Super Bowl Sunday millions of Americans come together to celebrate football’s biggest game. Metalsmith Wendy Edsall-Kerwin wanted to find a way to use her art to get into the spirit of the day. The Super “Bowl” Challenge was born.
By: Wendy Edsall-Kerwin Each year since then, Edsall-Kerwin has created a metal bowl, finishing it on Super Bowl Sunday. Starting in 2010, she has turned it into an event inviting others to join in and make their own bowls. Through her blog and an SBC Flickr group set-up each year, participants have shared their creations. Artists have used metal, wood, paper, clay, even detritus from a home improvement project. One participant posted a video of herself forming a metal bowl using a rock and a wooden stump. “It’s really fun to see all the different ways and materials the artists use to create their bowls,” says Edsall-Kerwin. “I started the SBC as a way to challenge myself but still have fun and it’s wonderful that others have really embraced the project, some returning year after year.” It might sound like it’s all fun and games, but Edsall-Kerwin takes the design and execution of each bowl seriously. All three of her past bowls have been in gallery exhibitions. Last year’s bowl, Memory & Shadow, was even juried into both the Art of the State: Pennsylvania 2011 and the prestigious national exhibition, Craft Forms 2011. For SBC 2012, Edsall-Kerwin has set-up a workshop through the Pa Guild of Craftsmen where students can learn to make their own metal bowl. It will be held at Millersville University on January 28-29, 2012 (the weekend before the actual Super Bowl) and more details can be found at the guild’s website, http://www.pacrafts.org/ For more info on the Super “Bowl” Challenge, visit http://hammermarks.wordpress.com/ ABOUT WENDY EDSALL-KERWIN or HAMMERSTROKE & FIRE: Wendy Edsall-Kerwin is a jewelry artist and metalsmith living and working out of her home in Elizabethtown, PA.
