Dec. 27, 2011 - PRLog -- Molds are microscopic fungi, a group of organisms which also includes mushrooms and yeasts. Fungi are highly adapted to grow and reproduce rapidly, producing spores and mycelia in the process. Everyone encounter mold every day. Foods spoil because of mold. Leaves decay and pieces of wood lying on the ground rot due to mold. That fuzzy black growth on wet window sills is mold. Paper or fabrics stored in a damp place get a musty smell that is due to the action of molds.

Molds are undesirable when they grow where we don’t want them, such as in homes. Over 270 species of mold have been identified as living in Canadian homes. Molds that grow inside may be different from the ones found outdoors. Many homeowners face more frequent hurricanes and associated flooding. Nothing spurs the growth of molds like a recent flood - molds start growing in four days. If not quickly eliminated, molds can multiply the flood damage.

During the fall months, mold often is a major component in making allergies unbearable.  Fallen leaves provice an ideal food source, because they also will hold in moisture, which is the key element in mold growth.  Beyond their ability to spark allergic reactions and asthma attacks, molds can cause many other health concerns ranging from  temporary discomfort to long term, life-threatening diseases.

Mold is considered to be an extremely small, dangerous element that belongs to the family of fungi. It can thrive on almost any surface especially cellulose-based objects. Though they maybe harmful at times, molds are considered a big part of the ecological balance in the community; they play a major role in breaking down organic substances in the environment.

According to some recent studies, approximately 50 percent of homes are inflicted with unknown moisture dilemmas. And as we all know molds thrive best in moist places. And to a large extent, all indoor mold growth is potentially harmful and should be removed promptly, no matter what types of mold are present or whether they can produce toxins. Awareness and sanitation should be observed to prevent the spread of molds in your homes.

The mother of actress Brittany Murphy, who died in 2009 of pneumonia, is saying that her daughter and her son-in-law passed away because of toxic mold in the couple’s home, according to news reports. The 32-year-old actress, who starred in hits like “Clueless” and “8 Mile” died in December 2009, with Monjack following less than five months later. Pneumonia was a leading cause of death in both cases.

The home they lived in, purchased in 2003 from Britney Spears, was later found to have been built poorly, allowing water to seep in and allegedly creating the right conditions for mold growth. Lawsuits against the builders were filed as early as 2006, leading many media outlets to report that black mold (or S. chlorohalonata) may have contributed to Murphy’s death.

According to the Hollywood Reporter , while the Los Angeles County coroner’s office did not find any mold during the autopsies of Murphy and Monjack, they did request permission to examine the home for the fungi — something they claim Sharon Murphy did not allow. Back in the summer of 2010, only months after her son-in-law’s passing, Sharon denied the mold allegations or any requests from the coroner’s office.

Investigate don't test. The most practical way to find a mold problem is by using your eyes to look for mold growth and by using your nose to locate the source of a suspicious odor. If you see mold or if there is an earthy or musty smell, you should assume a mold problem exists. Other clues are signs of excess moisture or the worsening of allergy-like symptoms.

If you detect a visible mold growth, eliminate it as soon as possible! Or the mold could spread through the house and cause an extensive mold infestation, which is usually not covered by insurance. Exercise caution when removing molds because they release particles and mold spores when disturbed. Wear a mask or respirator, gloves, goggles, and coveralls.

Testing should never take the place of visual inspection and it should never use up resources that are needed to correct moisture problems and remove visible growth. Sometimes, mold growth is hidden and difficult to locate. In such cases, carefully conducted sampling may help determine the location of contamination. However, mold testing is rarely  useful for trying to answer questions about health concerns.
