Gifted Teacher Will Teach an Illiterate Gypsy Family to Read in Hours

A challenge to teach an entire illiterate family to read in two weeks has been accepted by a dynamic Irish teacher.  Gertrude Linnane-Garrow has been called the world’s most gifted teacher and she claims that she can do what seems to be ‘the impossible’.  Not only is she going to teach this family to read in such an incredibly short time, but she will teach them together. The gypsy family consists of two adults and four children aged 16, 15, 10 and 5 .

Gertrude will undertake this challenge at a centre in Bracknell, Berkshire, UK.

She says, “The technique she uses is so effective that it has been used to teach illiterate, dyslexic 14 year olds with below average IQ’s to read in 30-40 hours and children as young as three have learned the alphabet letter-shapes, names and sounds, the high-frequency words that make up 25% of textbook vocabulary and read phonetically in 12 hours or less.”

In 1988, Gertrude amazed educationalists in the UK by teaching four children with severe learning difficulties to read in days.  According to psychologists who assessed these children before and after, “It seemed like a miracle.  The children were transformed…the greatest invention since the blackboard and chalk….I am in no doubt this study demonstrates a large superiority in reading gains....”

As a result of her astounding success in this trial, Gertrude was invited abroad to teach children of all ages, levels and abilities including those with dyslexia, ADHD, Asperger Syndrome and Autism and to run teacher training workshops internationally. Gertrude is now back in the UK and on completion of the challenge she plans to run a series of teacher training workshops.
