Lawyers learn to spot liars with Opus Performance

Dec. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- During an engaging and interactive presentation, the Birmingham lawyers learnt many tips and tactics to help them identify when someone is not telling the truth.  Mike explained that many common myths about how to spot liars are in fact misleading.  For example it is commonly thought that people who lie won’t look you in the eye.  The opposite is in fact true:  Because liars know that this is thought to be the case, liars tend to look you in the eye for a little too long for comfort – because they are making a special point of doing so.

“Businesses lose millions of pounds a year because of fraud, lying and deception.  Getting some training in the art of lie spotting will lead to massive savings in the long run,” says Mike Drayton.

“I did not have sexual relations with that woman.”

President Clinton’s statement (above) is one of the most well known lies of recent times.  Mike Drayton was able to spot it a mile off.  “Liars tend to use rather formal, non-contracted words such as ‘did not’ rather than ‘didn’t’.  They also tend not to use people’s names.  If President Clinton was an honest president he would have said ‘I didn’t have sex with Monica Lewinski’”, continues Dr Drayton.

Birmingham City Council Legal Department are now well versed in the art of spotting liars.  One participant said how “useful, interesting and enjoyable” the training session was.   The aim of the training is to help organisations save money by identifying fraud, lying and deception but it is quite often useful in everyday life too.
