DuPage County Law Firm Offers Advice for Dealing with Divorce and the New Year

Dec. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- As a new year approaches, it’s often hard to imagine that the situation you are currently facing will or can ever get better.  While they say ‘time heals all wounds,’ it’s hard to imagine how just the changing of the date on a calendar can bring some much needed peace into one’s life.

“The new year is the perfect time to reflect on the past and look at what has happened,” says law firm partner, Kari Cornelison.  “Maybe there are some things you regret doing, or situations you could have handled better.  It’s now the time to wipe the slate clean and make plans for how to avoid those types of events from occurring as you move forward.”

Here are a few recommendations – based upon your situation.

If you are contemplating divorce, put this aside for the holidays.  Then as the new year approaches, sit down and figure out what you – and your partner – really want to do.  If moving ahead with your divorce is still going to take place, set some milestones as to what you’d like to happen and when.

If you are in the middle of divorce, use this time to reassess where you are and where things currently stand.  Again, this could simply be putting some milestones into place.

If your divorce was just finalized, is it now time to focus on you: your wants, your needs, your future.  This new year is going to be all about getting on with your life.

As you transition through each of these times, it’s important to keep the kids involved – assuming they are of an appropriate age to understand.   “Sharing the goals and plans for the new year can help your children find some much needed stability and security.  It allows them to see what’s ahead during this time and ask for help with changes they may need to make as well,” states Cornelison.
