Dec. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- When skin is itchy, dry and cracking, jumping into the shower offers relief. Besides the fact that water adds moisture to skin, it can also remove debris and irritants that may contribute to eczema flare-ups

After about 10 minutes spent in the shower, water no longer moisturises skin. In fact, the opposite happens – skin can’t retain the moisture and will dry out with excessive showering.

Extremely hot water is another no-no in the fight against dry skin – use lukewarm water, hot water withdraws natural oils from skin, your skin should not redden in the shower.

After taking a lukewarm,  five minute shower, there’s still work to be done to protect your skin.

Eczema sufferers have time against them after stepping out the shower. Moisturising within minutes of showering helps your skin retain moisture and avoid cracking. When your skin is damp, it’s the perfect time to apply moisturizing ointments and creams.

Retaining water is essential when moisturising eczema, it doesn’t mean you have to drip dry after every shower. Blot your skin with a towel and then apply moisturiser so you don’t remove natural oils.

But, there’s no point following the correct procedure to protect your skin from eczema if you’re not going to use the right products…

The aisles of our local shops burst with lotions, creams and ointments. Though it may seem that they all do the same thing, there are important differences when it comes to eczema treatment and eczema soap. What you need is a product with enough oil to retain moisture and prevent excessive dryness.

Lotions are the mildest of the bunch when it comes to treating eczema. Lotion contains some oil but its main ingredient is water, which eventually evaporates, making it ineffective for extreme eczema. Lotion is a good option for people with mild cases of eczema.
Cream is more suited to people who have more severe eczema as it contains equal parts water and oil. Because the goal is to create a layer between moistened skin and the environment, a thick barrier like cream can help. However,  some creams have additives and preservatives that can cause irritation, worsening eczema.
The best way to moisturise eczema and care for your damaged skin is to use eczema soap. Eczema soap contains oils which create a protective barrier from the environment, as well as a whole host of natural ingredients that soften, smooth and protect damaged skin. Including natural oils which are anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial.

Eczema is a highly reactive condition –  scratching a patch of  itchy skin will worsen symptoms and can cause a rash. Gently moisturising eczema is an extremely important part of managing your condition.

Dyes, perfumes, detergents, alcohol and other chemicals are irritants for the skin and cause eczema flare-ups. Sufferers should check creams and ointments for these ingredients,  these additives can also be found in soaps and cleansers. Look for moisturising elements like glycerin in your soap.

Some mild products help dry skin , e.g Dove and Vaseline. Vaseline is a simple, gelatinous product that help protect skin.

So you need an easy touch while you’re moisturising, but there’s so much more to protecting your skin.
