Dec. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- “Service Above Self” is the motto for the Rotary Club of Sparks. Each year, the volunteer organization focuses on improving quality of life for local area kids. For the 9th straight year, Sparks Rotarians and their dedicated sponsors raised $23,000 for Kids Free Fishing Day that took place on June 12th. The annual event supplied fishing poles, bait and tackle to almost 1,500 local area kids.

In addition to raising money for kids, the Sparks Rotary has various youth programs to help give kids memorable experiences outside the classroom. The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Rotary Business Academy challenges students to think strategically and help them develop their leadership skills. Sparks Rotarians also finance two students each year to go abroad for the Rotary Youth Exchange program.

Bob Lord, the Immediate Past President of Rotary Club of Sparks and owner of The Electric Company of Reno, says, “Sparks Rotarians are business professionals who are focused on giving back, regardless of the economy. My employees at The Electric Company and I enjoy how Rotary gives us the opportunity to positively impact the kids in our area. ”

Lord helped to recruit volunteers for the event. Next up for the Sparks Rotary is the “Best in the West” Nugget Rib Cook-Off in September. Members will be volunteering at the annual event.
