Peter Max’s Original Acrylic on Canvas, “Cosmic Fantasy” is one of the featured lots at the 2011 Winter Auction. The large artwork (a stunning 75 x 54in. canvas) is both calming and commanding with its light blue overtones and striking yellows and reds.  It’s an iconic Peter Max artwork that contains some of his famous elements. Baterbys also made it the cover image of their hardcover catalog which is available at $49.99 from their gallery, online store and other sites like EBay. “Comic Fantasy” is estimated at $75,000 to $80,000.

America's Painter Laureate and Pop Art Icon, Peter Max uses bold colors, uplifting images and uncommon artistic diversity. Ever since opening his studio in 1962, Peter Max has been winning awards, commissions and gaining worldwide recognition as an artist who mixed Realism with popular culture, the bold lines of classical art with the colorful palette of the modern world. He has been on the forefront of major national events, creating emblematic images that captured the spirit of the 60’s. In 1991, Max’s one-man retrospective at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, drew the largest turnout for any artist in Russian history, over 14,500 people attended.

Another star lot is a signed etching (aquatint and drypoint plate) by Pablo Picasso entitled, “Souvenirs: Cirque, avec El Gigante, et Autoportrait en Bebe-V” (Memories: Circus, with El Gigante and Self-Portrait as a Baby – Old Man). The artwork is from Picasso’s Suite 347 – his largest print series that he embarked on when he was eighty-six years old. Its name represents the number of prints in the suite, a project he completed in less than seven months in an etching workshop close to his residence in the South of France. Wide ranging in its motifs, Suite 347 engages spectacle and theater, as if presenting a stage on which Picasso reviews his life and art. This particular artwork is relatively large and commands as much attention as any other Picasso, with its obvious menagerie of well-scrutinized imageries and deep layers of perplexing, hidden meanings. The Museum of Modern Art in New York is just one of the top museums in the world that houses the same piece of art.

Pablo Picasso is ranked as the most prolific artist who ever lived. Not only did he create actual artworks at an unprecedented level, but he also pioneered revolutionary art movements that changed the face of modern art and became one of the most influential individuals in the hallways of history alongside colonialists, scientists, political leaders and other key figures. He was constantly involved in social matters and was therefore not unhinged on the pressing realities of his time.

Baterbys has been in the art industry for over 25 years. The company’s expertise in art is unparalleled and in turn, they offer their clients something unique in the industry: a lifetime money-back guarantee of authenticity for each work of art it sells, and a lifetime exchange policy for each work of art it sells.
