South Coast Records' President, Larry Poynter is an up-and-coming "music mogul" following the footsteps of Russell Simmons, President of Def Jam Records. Larry Poynter states, "In the early 80's I gravitated to Hip Hop by having the privilege of watching Def Jam Records grow as a company. Although I was young, I knew that I wanted to own my own record label one day. I have always been inspired by Russell Simmons, President of Def Jam at that time. He made his company look very big from the outside although he was selling records out of his dorm room."
"He was a visionary that had his finger on the pulse of what Hip Hop was and will be. I try to model my business after Mr. Simmons. He felt that it was important to put out the very best music that he could. He would never put his name on an average artist just to get sales. I also want to follow his footsteps by venturing in other business as well. Selling records is only a small part of his brand. I plan to have South Coast Records recognized globally as a brand that deals in quality. Period... No matter what the product. I must say that Russell Simmons is the person behind my drive and determination to succeed."
