Dec. 12, 2011 - PRLog -- SpiceRoads Cycle Tours, the leading bicycle tour operator in Asia, launched two new cultural tours that depart from Luang Prabang, Laos. The tours are a journey of discovery through the splendid scenery of the Laos countryside and takes cyclists from village to village to explore the daily life of Laotians and their unique culture.

The one-day Luang Prabang Explorer tour takes cyclists on a leisurely ride to the rural landscape left untouched by the modern world that lies just outside the city of Luang Prabang. The tour starts with a short bicycle ride to the banks of the Mekong River where a local ferry is used to reach the dirt roads that wind through green rice fields and orchards. Along the way cyclists will pass through small villages with friendly people who are happy to have a chat. A stop for a taste of the local delicacy, Kholam, a sweet sticky rice mixed with palm sugar slowly baked in a length of a bamboo, will give cyclists an energy boost. The tour also stops to visit Ban Jannu, an old community where skilled potters craft intricate pots and jars. The total riding distance is 37 km. The Luang Prabang Explorer tour starts at 7:30 am and ends at 5 pm and includes a pick up and drop off from Luang Prabang hotels for the price of US$65 (25% discount for children age 12-17 years old). This tour has guaranteed daily departures with a minimum of 2 passengers. Refreshments, lunch, a mountain bike and helmet are included.

On the new two-day Luang Prabang Countryside tour cyclists will experience local life in northern Laos. The riding is at a slow pace on dirt roads shared with oxen, pigs, chickens and the occasional motorbike. The route takes riders to a Khmu village with their traditional culture and stops for a rest and swim break at the beautiful Tad Hoykoua waterfall. The night is spent at the village of Ban Nongphou at a homestay to offer the opportunity to meet with Laotians. The second day of riding will be on small trails that lead from village to village. After a local lunch the riders continue on to a village where the art of traditional pottery can be observed. A ferry ride across the Mekong River brings the cyclists back to Luang Prabang. The Luang Prabang Countryside tour departs every Saturday and Tuesday with a minimum of two adults. The cost is US$250 per person (25% discount for children age 12-17 years old). Vehicle support, refreshments, meals, night at homestay and a mountain bike and helmet are included.
