Dec. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- Wrinkle creams are designed to prevent and eliminate wrinkles and other signs of ageing. They may do this by protecting the skin against damaging environmental factors such as UV radiation or by counteracting the natural deterioration of the skin that occurs as part of the ageing process. Many brands of wrinkle creams use scientific language when describing the effects of their creams and claim to have shown that their products are scientifically proven to get rid of wrinkles.

In reality, wrinkle creams are deemed to be a cosmetic rather than a medicine by the FDA, and so they are not held to such high standards and drugs. Most of the ingredients that are used in wrinkle creams have not been definitively proven to be able to prevent or treat wrinkles. In most cases, the studies that have proven the efficacy of the cream are run by the companies that produce them and are not rigorous clinical trials. They rely on subjective reports of improvements in the appearance of skin after use of the cream.

The FDA does regulate skincare products when they contain ingredients that are potentially harmful or when their manufacturers advertise them with claims that they can change the skin in a drug-like way. The FDA is responsible for making cosmetics manufacturers place a warning on creams containing alpha hydroxy acids to the effect that these chemicals can increase the risk of being burned by the sun.

Some ingredients have been scientifically proven to reduce wrinkles. Prescription wrinkle creams do contain effective ingredients, and some non-prescription wrinkle creams contain similar ingredients, although usually at lower concentrations. Retinoids such as tretinoin and retinol, which are derivative of vitamin A have been scientifically proven to reduce wrinkles.

The appearance of the skin can be improved by many wrinkle creams, but the effect is often temporary. Even a simple moisturizer can make the skin softer and plumper, which can make lines and wrinkles less apparent. Many wrinkle creams are very effective at improving the appearance of skin in the short-term.

Some wrinkle creams claim to be able to do much more than this. They suggest that they are able to undo some of the damage that has already been caused to the skin, reducing wrinkles and even preventing the deterioration of the connective tissues that is associated with age. There is little reliable proof that wrinkle creams can perform these types of actions. This does not mean that wrinkle creams cannot perform such functions, but it does mean that the claims of the cosmetic companies should not be taken at face value. Testing out the cream for yourself is often a more reliable way of determining how effective it is on your skin type, although you will not be able to see the long-term effects for many years.

One way to tell how effective a wrinkle cream is likely to be is to look at the ingredients. If the ingredients really can help to prevent or reduce wrinkles, then they will probably be used in many different wrinkle creams. There is also likely to be some scientific evidence that suggests they are effective, or at least a scientific explanation for how they could affect the skin.
