See our history below;

The history of Balzano’s Family Restaurant or “Tweet’s” is about family and tradition. It begins in 1954 when “Papa” John Balzano started a community club where locals could gather to swap tales of fishing and hunting, play cards or bocce, and share in the delights of old world Italian cuisine and seafood dishes. The original building was little more than a chicken coop, but “Papa” and his wife, Mamie, served up some delectable treats and the place gained in popularity.

By 1960, Papa and Mamie’s son Anthony “tweet” Balzano and his wife, Millie, bought the building and opened it as a family restaurant. Offering a distinctive mix of Italian and seafood dishes, “Tweet’s” colorful charm and flavor caught on fast, and quickly became THE PLACE to gather for fellowship, conversation, and great food at reasonable prices. Pasta by the pound and luscious steamers along with Tweet’s unique personality drew crowds from all over southeastern New England, and the lines to get in on a warm summer’s evening often stretched some distance up Mt. Hope Avenue.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s, “tweet’s” moved for a time to the Bristol Motor Lodge on Metacom Avenue. The building was larger, and Tweet and Millie’s older son, John, who had studied culinary arts at the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven, took charge of putting together delicious dinners for banquets, weddings, and social functions. But the desire to return to the original site on family ground was too strong, and the old “chicken coop” on Mt.Hope Avenue was transformed into an attractive, modern restaurant with room for weddings and banquets. By now a new generation of Balzanos in the person of young John, trained in the culinary arts had taken over the day to day operation of a thriving family business. He was soon joined in the enterprise by younger brother Billy.

On Saturday, February 12 1995, disaster struck in the form of a fire that leveled the original wood frame structure. The family, however, pulled together and in August of ‘95 reopened the restaurant in its present form. Like the Phoenix of antiquity, the new “Tweet’s” rose from the ashes of the old.

In March of 1996, Anthony  “Tweet” Balzano passed away, just months after helping to oversee the reconstruction process.

Today Tweet’s sons, John and Billy, carry on the legacy that both Tweet and his father “Papa” John had begun. The family tradition continues even today. Though imitators abound, none can compare to the original “Tweet’s” in flavor, flare, and fare. That is why for four generations now New Englanders have been saying “Meet you at Tweet’s!”
